Treatment For Panic Attacks?

Without the right kind of treatment, a person who suffers from panic attacks can often find that they take control of their lives. This leaves in a situation where they find leading a normal life much more difficult to do. Below we take a look at some of the effective treatments for panic attacks that people are now using.

For some people they find that the most effective way for treating this particular disorder is through the use of medication. Their doctor after diagnosing that they are suffering from panic attacks will prescribe a medication, which helps to adjust the chemicals in the body. Specifically these drugs will work on preventing the adrenal glands from producing too much adrenaline.

In most cases, people who suffer panic attacks will be either prescribed anti-depressants or benzodiazepines to treat the condition. These are both not only extremely effective at helping to treat the condition but are safe as well. But whichever medication is prescribed they all work in different ways.

In some cases, the effect they have on a person once taken can be extremely quick whilst for others it may happen gradually. But when taking such medication it needs to be taken on a regular basis over a long period of time. For some people they may find that they need to take the medication for 6 months or longer. There are some people who actually will end up having to take their medication for a year.

Another way of treating panic attacks without the use of medication is by the person working in collaboration with a psychotherapist. It is this trained professional, which will help the sufferer to learn to actually have more control over the anxiety that they are feeling.

The most common form of psychotherapy used today for treating panic attacks is known as CBT (cognitive behavorial therapy). The psychotherapist will teach the patient to learn how to anticipate and then prepare himself or herself for any kind of situation or bodily sensation, which is likely to trigger an attack.

In most cases normally a person will only to under go 8 to 12 weeks of therapy in order to learn the skills that are required to help control or prevent an attack occurring. However, for others it may take a little more time for them to learn these techniques. But it has the one advantage over medication in that it is completely natural.

Yet for some people the only effective way of treating this particular anxiety disorder is through a combination of both medication and therapy. But it is important that in order to help this condition from progressing any further a person will need to start treatment for panic attacks as soon as possible. So the earlier a diagnosis can be found the sooner then treatment can begin.
